| Sey Wah! Cultural Purgatory | It probably doesn't take much to trigger the memories. That very first plane ride. The intense feeling of excitement tempered somewhat with the gut feeling of uncertainty. The dreams. The expectations. The promise of a better life. Dreams of new things, new friends, new experiences. That first ride "home" from the airport. Undoubtedly, many expatriates will remember the first time leaving Jamaica to take up residence in one of the many foreign countries where Jamaicans can be found en masse. Take for example the over 700,000 Jamaicans who live in the New York City Tri-State area. For many of them, the initial euphoria of all things American may have proven to be short-lived as reality set in and started to chomp on many of their fresh, delectable, new-Jamaican-immigrant backsides.

| Pieces Of The Past: The Road To Freedom & Birth of Independence | Relive the history of Jamaica with these two exciting pieces from our series Pieces of the Past.
" Freedom can be said to have arrived in two stages; the first being the early morning of Friday, August 1, 1834. On that day many slaves were said to have walked up hills and climbed trees so as to clearly witness the literal dawning of their freedom."

"From Savannla-La-Mar to Morant Bay, from Above Rocks to Port Maria, as the clock struck midnight on August 5, 1962, the strains of our national anthem were heard for the first time while Union Jacks were lowered and the Jamaican flag unveiled."
